We got a major grant
for our historic chapel
Good Shepherd/El Buen Pastor is one of 30 houses of worship across the United States to be accepted into the 2025 National Fund for Sacred Places program.
Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd/El Buen Pastor has received $100,000 from the National Fund for Sacred Places, a program of Partners for Sacred Places, in collaboration with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This funding will support restoration work in the Narthex as well as other needs in the Memorial Chapel. We will begin a capital campaign to match that grant over the next two years with money that we raise from within the church, our community and state historic building resources.
Good Shepherd/El Buen Pastor has deep roots in the Ogden community. The Memorial Chapel, built in 1875, is the oldest building in Ogden still being used for its original purpose. From its inception as a congregation meeting in Union Station in 1870, Good Shepherd has served its community. It built the first school for railroad workers and the first cemetery in Ogden, responding to the needs of the community, and it has continued that work through the decades. It was a founding partner of Lantern House, the primary shelter for the unhoused in Northern Utah, and it created Youth Impact, an after-school program for Ogden youngsters who need a safe place.
That outreach continues through Shepherd's Bowl, a program that creates sack lunches for the community every Wednesday, and Shepherd's Fold, which provides linens and towels for people transitioning into permanent housing. Good Shepherd/El Buen Pastor also has hosted a booth at Ogden Pride for the past several years, believing that all people are children of God.
Good Shepherd/El Buen Pastor is one of 30 organizations to receive a total of over $8.7 million in grant funding this year to provide training, planning grants, technical assistance, capacity-building support, and capital grants to congregations of all faiths. Some 319 communities of faith from throughout the country initially applied.
Since its inception, the National Fund has awarded or pledged over $33 million to 168 community-serving congregations representing 28 faith traditions across 45 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Good Shepherd/El Buen Pastor is the second house of worship in Utah to be accepted into the prestigious program.
Our Memorial Chapel is now 150 years old, and it's showing wear, especially in the Narthex, where we enter the church to worship. We know restoration will require historic preservation expertise and a masterful touch. This grant will allow us not only to take care of the urgent needs of our historic building, but also to evaluate the condition of the entire chapel and plan for its upkeep over the long term. We are excited to embark on this new partnership.
